Port of Subs® Recognized for Innovative Turkey Sandwich Menu Items with National Turkey Federation’s T.O.M. Award

The National Turkey Federation (NTF) presented Port of Subs® with its Seventh Annual “Turkey on the Menu” (T.O.M.) Award. The award recognizes this chain of casual/family style restaurants for its consistent and innovative turkey sandwich menu items that distinguish them from the competition.

Port of Subs® has become known for its commitment to quality and superior customer service. All sandwiches are made-to-order with the freshest possible ingredients. Port of Subs’ customer favorites include the Turkey Provolone, Turkey and Bacon Ranch Wrap and the Kids Turkey Sandwich. The Pilgrim Sandwich is another successful menu item that is a holiday limited time offering.

Winning this prestigious award is a real thrill and honor.”

A big part of the success of the establishment’s core line-up of turkey sandwiches is the use of smoked turkey. The distinct flavor is a major reason why people come back again and again.

“Keen business savvy was used in developing The Pilgrim, a Thanksgiving-inspired sandwich that is a holiday favorite for consumers and delivers a major lift for sales each fall,” said Lisa Burkhart, national accounts manager, Butterball, LLC, who nominated Port of Subs®.

“By using turkey products and creating a recognizable flavor for consumers, Port of Subs® has shown that with a little creativity, turkey can be the perfect protein choice year round,” said Sherrie Rosenblatt, NTF’s vice president of marketing and communications.

Port of Subs was started more than 30 years ago by two brothers from New Jersey who opened a sub shop in Sparks, Nev. Today, the company has more than 150 units in seven Western states and has been recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Franchise 500” and Restaurants & Institutions “Top 400” as one of the top franchising opportunities.

Winning the casual/family style category of the T.O.M Award, Port of Subs® joined Jason’s Deli, winner of the fast food category/quick serve category, J. Alexander’s of the fine dining category and ARAMARK Corporation, winner of the non-commercial category, at the 2009 reception held at the NRA convention.

NTF members nominate the foodservice chains that exemplify the criteria of the T.O.M. award. Entrant applications address questions regarding turkey menu applications, the items’ consumer appeal, how the chain promotes the menu items through marketing and turkey’s food cost percentage. A panel of foodservice professionals rates the entries on consumer appeal, versatility, taste, value, and how the turkey application benefits the chain operation.
