Roll Out the Turkey for a Revamped Reuben

Looking to add a little oomph to your oom-pah this Oktoberfest? Try a turkey Reuben sandwich that sizzles with sauerkraut and packs a protein punch to boot.

The delicious new seasonal recipe from the National Turkey Federation comes just in time for Oktoberfest partygoers looking for a new twist on an old stand-by. And because turkey has more protein and less fat and cholesterol than beef and chicken, a turkey Reuben sandwich is the perfect meal for Oktoberfest revelers looking to power up on protein and cut back on fat.

The recipe is available on www.eatturkey.com, where consumers can sign up to receive a healthy, new turkey recipe every month via e-mail or pick from among 1,500 ideas for preparing delicious turkey meals in the National Turkey Federation's consumer-friendly, searchable database.

Turkey Reuben Sandwich, serves 4:

Ingredients

  • 1/4 Cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 Slices rye bread
  • 1/2 Cup sweet honey mustard
  • 8 Slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 Pound OVEN ROASTED TURKEY BREAST, sliced thin
  • 1/2 Cup sauerkraut, well drained
  • As needed French fries
  • 4 Whole dill pickles

    Add One/Roll Out the Turkey for a Revamped Reuben

    1. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Spread the other side of each slice of bread with sweet honey mustard.
    2. Top four of the bread slices (mustard side up) with 1 slice cheese, 4-ounces sliced turkey and 2 tablespoons well-drained sauerkraut. Place remaining cheese and bread slices atop each sandwich.
    3. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Grill sandwiches until browned, then turn and grill until heated through and cheese is melted.
    4. Serve with French fries and pickles if desired.
