Innovative Turkey Sandwiches Offer Layers of Flavors Celebrate National Sandwich Month with non-traditional creations
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 1, 2005 -
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: National Sandwich Month is approaching and it is no surprise that turkey continues to be the most popular sandwich meat among consumers in the United States. According to the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association, turkey deli and breast meat are among the top-selling sandwich meats. To celebrate the occasion, the National Turkey Federation (NTF) is offering operators "hot" menu ideas that go beyond the traditional turkey sandwich. "The turkey sandwich has been a staple on restaurant menus for years, but now we are seeing more chef-inspired hot toasted sandwiches," said Sherrie Rosenblatt, NTF's senior director of marketing and communications. "Operators can experiment with the variety of turkey products available to create a unique and satisfying menu favorite." This growing consumer demand comes from the perception that hot sandwiches are more upscale and higher quality. Toasted sandwiches have made their way from white tablecloth establishments to chain menus. Subway, Quizno's and Blimpie demonstrate this new trend by offering consumers their favorite sandwiches fresh and oven toasted. Turkey's versatility is perfect for hot sandwiches and can be used in cuisines from around the globe. Try a Roast Turkey Panini, which combines delicious slices of roasted turkey breast with Italian seasoning, cream cheese and red onions on sliced ciabatta bread, or Grilled Turkey Sandwich with Gouda, which layers homemade avocado and garlic mayonnaise, tomatoes, romaine lettuce and turkey on pumpernickel bread. These, along with more than 80 contemporary chef-developed sandwich recipes, can be found on the NTF website, EatTurkey.com. NOTE TO EDITORS: Photos are available upon request. The National Turkey Federation (NTF) is the national advocate for all segments of the turkey industry, providing services and conducting activities that increase demand for its members' products by protecting and enhancing their ability to profitably provide wholesome, high-quality, nutritious products. Its award-winning web site, www.eatturkey.com, offers consumers, food professionals and the media an extensive library of information including healthy eating and restaurant trends, turkey cuts and purchasing tips, turkey nutrition and cooking techniques, and turkey facts and trivia. Additionally, the site presents a searchable database of more than 1,500 recipes, offers a recipe E-mail program and provides special seasonal and holiday ideas.
